Ellicott’s Mills began as a commercial grain milling company located in the area of present-day Ellicott City, about 16 miles west of the City of Baltimore, Maryland. The mills that were located there, and the proprietors of those mills, are largely credited for the growth and prominence of the area and for much of the early expansion and settlement westward from the region.
